Numerous bills were tabled by Private Members in the House of Commons before the closure of the parliament session earlier this summer. Among them is Bill C-362 that was tabled by Werner Schmidt, Conservative MP for the Kelowna-Lake Country in British Columbia. Bill C-362 proposes that the Canadian Forces Superannuation Act be amended ""to allow the survivor of a contributor to receive an annual allowance after the death of the contributor notwithstanding the fact that the contributor and the survivor married or commenced to live in a conjugal relationship after the contributor had attained the age of sixty years"". In other words, Bill C-362 proposes for the Canadian Forces pension plan exactly what FSNA Standing Resolution number 7 is targeting for the three main federal public sector pension plans covering the Public Service and the members of the Canadian Forces and the RCMP. In early August, FSNA National President Dennis Jackson wrote a detailed letter of support for Bill C-362 to MP Werner Schmidt. Among other things, he stressed the importance of addressing the underlying marriage-related restriction not only in respect of the Canadian Forces, but also of the RCMP and the Public Service.
