Petition - Old Age Security

VVi 30 Jan 2011 pe

Petition Sponsor:

Judy Sgro, MP

Canadians, we work hard. We pay our taxes, and try to save for retirement. But now Stephen Harper wants to take that away from us - unless you stop him.

Retired Canadians and those approaching retirement have every reason to be worried after Stephen Harper attacked Old Age Security (OAS) benefits during a speech in Europe.

He's prepared to raise the age Canadians qualify for Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement from 65 to 67. If you're approaching 65 that means you could miss out on as much as $30,000 of payments that you were counting on.

The best way to make sure income tested benefits likes OAS and the Guaranteed Income Supplement are affordable is by ensuring Canadians have access to strong pension plans so they won't need the extra benefits. That is the path to sustainable prosperity for all Canadians.

Let's stop Stephen Harper's money grab now, before he puts it in the budget. Let's not let him build more jails on the back of our retirement savings.

Let’s get the other parties on the go with a petition. And, how about private groups?

Please sign the petition and share it on Facebook and Twitter.

                               Petition - Veterans Deserve Better

To All Veterans & Supporters

Sean Casey, the Liberal Veteran Affairs Critic from Prince Edward Island has launched an on line petition to stop the 226 million dollars being slashed in Veteran Affairs.  I urge you to go on this site and add your name to the petition.

Joe Beauchene MMM, CD

Sign the petition: Restore funding to veterans' benefits

Version française

The veterans’ benefits you and your family depend on are in jeopardy. And I need your help making sure Canadians know about it.

The Conservative government has already announced cuts of $226 million from Veterans Affairs Canada, hurting the department’s ability to deliver the compensation and benefits our veterans rely on. And this is in addition to $175 - 350 million in “Strategic Review” cuts the department must make starting next year.

Because of these cuts, human and financial resources will not be there for soldiers and their families when they return home to heal from the physical and mental wounds that come in service of Canadians.

After all the sacrifices that you, your families, and your compatriots-in-arms have made for your country, you should not be asked to fight your own government for recognition and support.

We are fighting for you and your rights in Parliament when others won’t. But we need you to stand with us. Together, our voices can be heard.

Please sign this petition calling on the government to restore funding to Veterans Affairs and share it with friends and family on Facebook and Twitter.

Petition -

Military/RCMP Veterans

Against Annuity

Benefit Reduction at Age 65

Petition Text:

To: The Right Honourable Stephen Harper
Prime Minister of Canada

This Petition is organized in support of Bill C-221, to convince the Prime Minister of Canada to take action to terminate the claw back to Military/RCMP Veterans Annuity plans when they attain age 65.

Military/RCMP pensioners seek no funds from the Public Account! We simply request that a portion of the surplus dollars, available in our Annuity account, be allocated to improve the standard of living to our Veterans. Give them the “Financial Dignity” they so richly deserve!

In 1966 the CPP was introduced as an “Income Security” program, supplementing Old Age Security. The Government of the day created a gross injustice, deliberate or otherwise, by not giving us a choice to participate in the decision making process. Veterans were not properly advised of the pitfalls we would encounter at age 65. Senior Military Officers and RCMP personnel had absolutely no say in the matter of merging rather than stacking our Annuity contributions.

Veterans are a different Government provider. We were available 24/7, serving far abroad, and we were prepared to give the ultimate sacrifice to our Country. Our most Senior Decorated Officers support our Mission. Politicians have exempted themselves from the claw back that would have affected their Pensions. Veterans also deserve to be exempted!

In order to succeed, this petition must be individually signed by all supporters. Signing the petition is an absolute requirement to success! Every vote counts!

“Veterans want their Golden Years’ Financial Dignity restored!”

Petition -CANADIANS DEMANDING IMPROVEMENTS AND CHANGES TO THE CANADIAN FORCES MEMBERS AND VETERANS RE-ESTABLISHMENT AND COMPENSATION ACT, BETTER KNOWN AS THE “NEW VETERANS CHARTER”

Petition Sponsor:

Canadian Veterans National Day of Protest

Petition Text:

To:  The Prime Minister of Canada, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Parliament of Canada

CANADIANS DEMANDING IMPROVEMENTS AND CHANGES TO THE CANADIAN FORCES MEMBERS AND VETERANS RE-ESTABLISHMENT AND COMPENSATION ACT, BETTER KNOWN AS THE “NEW VETERANS CHARTER”

This petition is open to ALL Canadian citizens in support of serving CF Members, veterans and their families.

The Prime Minister of Canada,
The Minister of Veterans Affairs and
The Parliament of Canada,

This petition is organized to respectfully request the Prime Minister of Canada and the Minister of Veterans Affairs address the following issues facing our veterans immediately;

1. End the New Veterans Charter's lump sum disability payment and restore the life time pain and suffering pension to all CF veterans.

2. End the SISIP Claw back for all veterans’ disability pensions. It is fundamentally un-Canadian to claw back a pension on the older generation when the newer generation is, for this very reason, exempt from this financial hardship.

Always remember, the Veterans Affair Canada disability pension is awarded to our veterans for pain and suffering. As their website clearly states, this pension is NOT designed as income replacement and as such should NOT be deducted from long term disability claims at Manulife Life. While it may be common practice to offset one disability pension by another in most workplaces, the requirements to serve for Veterans cannot be compared to other employment; a different and unique standard must be set to reflect the unique terms of service of Veterans (the social contract up to and including loss of life).

3. End the widow's tax on disability pensions and one time lump sum payments. Our fallen heroes’ families have enough grief to deal with without the added taxation of an award that should be tax free.

4. End the reduction of veteran's military pensions at the age of sixty five. CF members served this nation with pride for many years and paid their contribution, they deserve this financial security as they grow older.

5. Address the concerns of the Agent Orange, Suffield Experimental Station victims, and nuclear test survivors (and their families) not only those that were volunteers, and other veterans who are suffering from a variety of physical and psychological issues including PTSD as a consequence of service to our nation.

6. Furthermore, take action on the recommendations set forth in the June 2010 40th Parliament, 3rd session report of the Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs titled: “A Timely Tune-up for the Living New Veterans Charter”. By extension, all of the more than 300 recommendations regarding the NVC should be implemented.

7. Reinstate all of the lapsed programs, benefits and services of the older legislation including the Pension Act. VAC should not have been permitted to arbitrarily reduce its responsibilities to veterans prior to the implementation of the NVC. It should be remembered that most veterans are covered by the legislation pre-dating the NVC. Their entitlements should be honoured.

8. Place a moratorium on reductions in VAC and review the manpower requirements. Many of the front line staff are unable to cope with their heavy and unacceptable workloads. Area counsellors should be increased so that they have enough time to work with their veterans and familiarise themselves with the vast array of services provided to veterans.

9. Implement legislation guaranteeing the Veterans Ombudsman is always a veteran and the office is an independent agency. It should not be subordinate to VAC.

10. Revise the definition of veteran to cover all personnel who serve in the capacity of military, paramilitary and related occupations on behalf of Canada. This should include military, police and civilian personnel assigned to operations recognized as military and security related. Everyone designated as a veteran should be entitled to the same services and benefits regardless of where, when or how they served Canada. There are historical precedents that have been enacted such as the Merchant Marine and other organizations in wartime.

The present Government continually say they recognize the need for special treatment for Veterans who serve Canada under adverse conditions. With this in mind, immediate action is required. You are requested to sign this petition in support of veterans and their families ensuring that they are provided lifelong compensation reflecting their invaluable and lifelong sacrifice to Canada.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

Reinstate all of the lapsed programs, benefits and services of the older legislation including the Pension Act. VAC should not have been permitted to arbitrarily reduce its responsibilities to veterans prior to the implementation of the NVC. It should be remembered that most veterans are covered by the legislation pre-dating the NVC. Their entitlements should be honoured.

Petition - Our Duty to Veterans

Petition Text:

To:  Government of Canada

We, the people of Canada, having need of military forces in war and peace, and requiring a national police force, recognize that members of these entities serve our greater need through personal risk and sacrifice.

We, the people of Canada, as the employer of these services, acknowledge our duty of care to those persons who have so served.

It is our belief:
- that financial and health care benefits should commence immediately upon request
- that entitlements should be granted unless disqualification is proven by the administering agency
- that every effort should be made to ensure veterans, their families and dependants, are adequately provided for, and
- that veterans should never have to fight for these entitlements.

This is Our Duty to Them.

Therefore, we, the undersigned people of Canada, request and require of our Government that action be taken to provide suitable and timely benefits for those who have served and sacrificed on our behalf.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
