Lt. Col. Christian, US Army - Agent Orange

Contributed by: L. (Tex) Leugner CD, Warrant Officer(Ret'd), Alberta Regional Director, Canadian Peacekeeping Veterans Association.

VVi 15 May 2012 db

Lt. Col. Christian, who served in Korea and Vietnam, died at the age of 80 years on 20 January, 2012.

"He was dedicated to finding the reasons as to why Veterans coming home from Vietnam were prematurely suffering from such illnesses as lymphoma, sarcoma and other cancer related diseases".

Col. Christian went head to head against many in the US Government who refused to acknowledge that agent orange was killing soldiers. His work must also be appreciated by those Canadian soldiers who were also affected by agent orange during field tests of this terrible chemical weapon at CFB Gagetown.

Christian lied about his age and joined the army at age 15 in 1946, fought in Korea as a Platoon Leader where he earned a Silver Star for bravery and completed two tours of duty in Vietnam, before taking on the US Government in tackling the scourge of agent orange.

He must be remembered by all Veterans as a great soldier and Veteran's advocate on both sides of the Canada/ US border.

His story can be found in the April 2012 issue of the American Legion Magazine.

VVi Publisher Recommendation - Veterans of Canada (VoC)

07 Mar 2012

I have been a subscriber and a member of VoC since this not-for-profit corporation's inception. The Founder and President Don Leonardo started this unique, veteran-based company to offer veteran self-starters a chance to develop their own businesses. It has evolved over the years to also providing a vibrant, interactive community for all veterans, and the lead on a number of veteran advocacy issues.

I highly recommend to any veteran to become a member of VoC.

   Mental Health Crisis

VVi 21 Sep 2011 reposted 06 Nov 2011

We are all familiar with the picture below.  It has been in Salute magazine many times and on the Veterans Affairs website.

This is a valuable program for Military Personnel, Veterans or any government employee who is emotionally struggling with life

It has successfully proven itself many times over in providing that lifeline for individuals who feel alone.

So remember this service is for a mental health crisis

For veterans; if you have a medical issue call the NCCN during their normal business hours.

The link below is the best step by step instruction you can use for yourself or a loved one in need.

I Need Your Help! - VVi Initiative

VVi 16 Sep 2011

I Need Your Help!

Veteran Voice was created to be an information source for the Veterans Community and others.  It was not intended to become another support group for Veterans; however, the staff do advocate for reforms to improve the quality of services and benefits provided to the Veterans Community by the federal government and other organisations.  Veterans and others do write to us seeking support, and usually they are advised to contact specific people or groups, who are capable of assisting.  It is not a case of not wanting to help, but rather ensuring that Veterans and others are advised about those who can help them.  The website staff are not able to provide assistance for the many who need it, often those who desperately need help.

Regardless of the general mandate of providing information, there are many times when the plight of individuals motivates all of us to provide support. Such cases have inspired a new feature which will highlight the problems of individuals, who have been traumatically affected by the bureaucratic indifference of VAC, other branches of the federal government and even the very groups dedicated to support the Veterans Community (such as the Royal Canadian Legion and related Veterans groups).

ND175 - Veteran's Card

Update  - Record of Service Card

This is the response from Minister VAC regarding an email of inquiry that Mr Bruce Nickel forwarded on the subject matter..

-----Original Message-----

From: Minister-Ministre Minister-Ministre

Subject: Veterans Affairs Canada

Dear Mr. Nickel:

Thank you for your e-mail requesting that the criteria for the identification card issued to Canadian Forces members be changed to include those who have served less than 10 years. I have carefully noted your concerns, and I would like to inform you that the Department of National Defence and Veterans Affairs Canada are currently exploring ways to improve the identification card issued by the Department of National Defence. One of the options being discussed is revising the 10-year eligibility criteria.

While I cannot confirm when these discussions will be completed, I can assure you that both departments remain committed to working together to provide the best possible support to Canadian Forces members, Veterans and their families. In closing, I would like to thank you for your dedicated service to Canada.

All Canadians benefit from the many achievements and sacrifices of those who serve our country in times of war, armed conflict and peace, and we are truly grateful to them.

Sincerely,

Steven Blaney, P.C., M.P.

Many of you have been asking about the “Veterans Card”.  A plastic Record of Service Card NDI75 is available to all retired military service personnel of the Canadian Forces, Regular and Reserve components.

Plusieurs d’entre vous me demande à propos de la « Carte du Vétéran ».  Une carte de registre de service NDI75 est disponible pour tous les militaires à la retraite des Forces canadiennes, y inclus la Régulière et la Réserve.

This card is valid to enter all federal government historic sites and is recognized at some historic sites in Europe as well.  It is essential to book free passage on VIA Rail in July and for other transportation agencies and companies for passage.

VAC Foreign Countries Operations (FCO)

27 Oct 2009 db

This is a relatively small section at VAC. However, I have personally found the FCO one of the most efficient sections within the department.

The FCO are on the ball! Having used their services before for my visits to the Texas homestead, within a week of application, I had info prepared by FCO in my hands. This included a letter of introduction to any USA military veterans clinic/hospital. Further, when checking the local vet medical facilities near my Texas homestead, the USA military clinic was already aware of my presence in the area, and were willing to assist with any of my medical needs thanks to the correspondence between VAC FCO and the US Veteran Administration. To say the least I am impressed with the full and complete efficient service provided by FCO.
